Sometimes, to find yourself, you must become someone else. You’re an Angel, She’s a Waitress

Simonstown, a picturesque village on South Africa’s Cape Coast, nestled between the mountains and the sea. For Damian Taylor this life is far from idyllic, but the quirky seaside town will soon become the backdrop for a strange kind of revenge…

Damian lives out his days among the town’s quirky inhabitants, an eclectic collection of sailors, fishermen and flower sellers going about their lives in the African sunshine. Damian is the new kid in school, where each day is another struggle for acceptance, and each night finds him alone while his singing single mother performs another gig in another town.

Damian hangs out with the school’s “misfit” crowd when he’s not alone watching old silent movies. And it looks as if this life is never going to change.

But when his new friend Amy is humiliated in a practical joke by school hero Alex Russell, Damian steps up to avenge her… by becoming the woman who will bring Alex to his knees. And so, Amy finds her knight in shining armour in a lipstick-wearing new kid with an alter ego called Laura Bow (a homage to Damian’s idol, silent screen goddess Clara Bow).

Damian as Laura enrols as the new “girl” in school, an exchange student from the mythical land of America. Alex is instantly bewitched by her, and Amy and her misfit crowd are satisfied that he will soon get a taste of his own medicine as Laura seduces him – only to break his heart.

Alex’s flourishing modelling career sees his face plastered on every billboard and bus stop in town. When he auditions for the school’s annual Shakespeare production, Laura finds the perfect way to get close to him. She wins the role of Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare’s tale concerned with the way in which “false face must hide what the false heart doth know…”

But as Damian/Laura draws closer to Alex, he/she becomes strangely reluctant to follow through with the plan. Damian finds himself confused by his own emotions. Why does he suddenly care about Alex, and why does he actually enjoy being around him? What began as a plan to restore Amy’s honour becomes a journey that asks much bigger questions than Damian ever could have imagined.

Laura Bow enjoys a life of popularity that always seemed beyond Damian’s grasp. As Laura he has everything he always wanted, including the attentions of someone who seems to understand him. But this double life cannot continue forever as each day brings Damian closer to a choice. By revealing his true self he could stand to lose everything, but this is nothing compared with what he could stand to gain – the acceptance he’s always dreamed of… and maybe, just maybe, love.
